Good Life Goal 2 as smiley with the title "eat better"

"The Good Life Goals (GLG) translate the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) into individual actions. In short, they tell you how you can act more sustainable every day. This is an important step to make sustainability a real peoples movement. Goal 2 explains how you can "EAT BETTER".

Goal 2 "EAT BETTER" asks for the following actions:

1) Learn how we farm, fish and make our food
2) Enjoy more fruits and vegetables
3) Buy local, seasonal and fairly traded food
4) Help children, elderly people and pregnant women to eat well
5) Demand an end to global hunger

It is linked to SDG 2 "End hunger, achieve food security and improved nutrition and promote sustainable agriculture."

On GLG 2.1: The easiest way to inform yourself about how today's food is produced is via the internet, e.g. Wikipedia. An even better way is to visit a food store (e.g. bakery, cheese dairy or a weekly market) or a local farmer and ask them for more information. If you live in a city and farms are far away, there a more and more urban gardening initiatives everywhere, which can show you how your fruits and vegetables are grown. Find an initiative closest to you on https://www.urbanfarming.org/garden-locations.html

On GLG 2.2 & GLG 2.3: There is not really more to add about eating more fruits and vegetables. It is healthy and eating those causes much less emissions and other negative environmental impact than eating meat. But consider that also fruit and vegatable can be more or less sustainable. Prefer regional and seasonal food to food from overseas, which needs to be transported via longer distances which cause a lot of emissions. Above that, look for a fair trade label on the food to ensure that the farm workers who produced your food are paid and treated fairly.

On GLG 2.4: Help others to learn more about healthy and sustainable food and provide your whole family with good food.

On GLG 2.5: A first step on the way to end hunger is to demand governments and supermarkets, but also every individual to fight food waste. In addition, you can advocate against food waste and for a sustainable food production politically and cast your vote for people who do the same.

Since October 14th, we are using Sunday mornings to discuss one GLG. Follow us to read more next Sunday.
