The Good Life Goals (GLG) translate the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) into individual actions. In short, they tell you how you can act more sustainable every day. This is an important step to make sustainability a real peoples movement. Goal 5 explains how you can "TREAT EVERYONE EQUALLY".
Goal 5 "TREAT EVERYONE EQUALLY" asks for the following actions:
1) Learn and share ways to end sexism
2) Raise kids to expect equality
3) Respect the men and women who care for families
4) Defend women’s reproductive rights
5) Oppose violence against women and girls
It is linked to SDG 5 "Achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls."
On GLG 5.1: The first step towards learning about how to end sexism is to learn about where sexism is present in your country/community and how it is affecting yourself. In many countries there are non-governmental organizations or governmental agencies who research about equality and publish reports that can serve as a starting point for your learning. While sexism is an everyday issue, we often don't realize that it is also very important to reflect about your own thinking and acting with regard to equality and sexism. Share and discuss your insights with your friends and families and help them to start their own reflection.
On GLG 5.2: In all your contacts with children (as parents/family, as friends, as (nursery) school teachers), teach them about the value of equality, be a role model and show them how to act in accordance with this value. Treat boys and girls equally: e.g. let both genders perform the same hobbies and let them wear whatever (colors) they want to. Don't force children into predefined gender role.
On GLG 5.3: Many women and men contribute to society by caring for family members, while getting only little appreciation for their service to society. Be explicitly thankful for their service. Advocate politically that those services are more rewarded and get governmental support.
On GLG 5.4: Demand from your government that it ensures the women's reproductive rights by embedding sex education for everyone, consultation about contraception as well as contraception measures for women and men in the health system Fight for the value that everyone deserve the right for an individual sexual orientation and integrity. Fight against the practice of female genital mutilation by speaking up about it in your community and by voting for people who feel the same and want to create change.
On GLG 5.5: Fight the tendencies in your country's culture that allow people to belittle women and that tolerate or even supports violence against women. How? By speaking out for equality. By rushing to the defence of women in danger of violence. By offering support for women who have been victims of violence. By advocating that violence against women is prosecuted, if not already, and, if not, by calling out the attackers publically.
Since October 14th, we are using Sunday mornings to discuss one GLG. Follow us to read more next Sunday.
