Good Life Goal 8 as worker smiley with the title "DO GOOD WORK"

The Good Life Goals (GLG) translate the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) into individual actions. In short, they tell you how you can act more sustainable every day. This is an important step to make sustainability a real peoples movement. Goal 8 explains how you can "DO GOOD WORK".

Goal 8 "DO GOOD WORK" asks for the following actions:

1) Learn family finance skills
2) Demand safe working conditions
3) Check no-one was exploited to make what you buy
4) Support local businesses at home and abroad
5) Stand up for everyone’s rights at work

It is linked to SDG 8 "Promote sustained, inclusive and sustainable economic growth, full and productive employment and decent work for all."

On GLG 8.1: In order to really benefit from your earnings from your salary, you need to know how to manage your (family's) finances. Know your earnings. Collect and analyze receipts to get an overview of your monthly expenditures. Create a savings account and pay small amounts into it every months to anticipate unexpected expenditures in the future (e.g. medical costs, repair costs for electronic devices/working tools/a car) or to enable larger investments (e.g. a car, a holiday journey, a new laptop). Look our for discounts to save money, but be cautious that discounts do not trick you into buying things that you do not really need. Teach (your) children the value of money and of salving.

On GLG 8.2: Demand work safety in your job: access to needed safety equiment (e.g. helmets, gloves, desinfection soap), work safety training, safety standards for dangerous work equipment (e.g. cutting machines, industrial saw machines), ban of dangerous chemicals and toxic materials, health supporting technological advancements (e.g. ergonomic changes of processes).

On GLG 8.3: Also when you buy food, cosmetics or other daily supplies, it is important to ensure that nobody is exploited to enable your consumption. In some sectors the working conditions, payments and safety standards are very low and people that produce your goods suffer enormously. Look out for the fair trade label. Inform yourself about the sustainability activities of your favorite stores or brands, maybe you will prefer another one in the future, if you know more.

On GLG 8.4: If you have the chance, you should prefer to buy locally. This will provide income to your neighbor citizens and will ensure that they will have a job in the future. Above that, it increases the taxes that your city receives which can be spend on education, infrastructure or culture events. Buying locally also enables better and personal services as well as easier access to maintenance. At the same time, buying locally also has environmental benefits. Reduced transport distances result in lower energy use and lower emissions.

On GLG 8.5: Engage in your works council, trade unions and associations to fight for employee rights. Even if you have a safe work environment, good working conditions and fair payment, other may need your voice of support to get the same. In addition, you should cast your vote in accordance with those values to create change on a national/regional level.

Since October 14th, we are using Sundays to discuss one GLG. Follow us to read more next Sunday.
