"The Good Life Goals (GLG) translate the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) into individual actions. In short, they tell you how you can act more sustainable every day. This is an important step to make sustainability a real peoples movement. Goal 9 explains how you can "MAKE SMART CHOICES".
Goal 9 "MAKE SMART CHOICES" asks for the following actions:
1) Learn about plans for progress in your country
2) Stay smart and kind online
3) Support construction that benefits people and protects the planet
4) Welcome innovations that make the world a better place
5) Demand the benefits from progress are shared
It is linked to SDG 9 "Build resilient infrastructure, promote inclusive and sustainable industrialization and foster innovation."
On GLG 9.1: All new national and local governments present their plans about how they want to advance the national/local communities, e.g. with health care advancements, (digital) infrastructure programs, education plans, innovation and industrial support or other measures. Go on their websites to find out more or contact your local representative.
On GLG 9.2: We all recognize, when engaging in social media, that anonymity leads some people to behave very rude. In order for a harmonious and productive online community it is crucial to base also our online communication on joint norms and kindness. With those, our online community will be a place for making and staying friends with people from around the world, for cooperation and joint projects, for credible information and entertainment. Also keep in mind to protect your own, your family's and your friends' privacy (think about it: is it really okay for someone else if you post the joint picture? will you maybe regret posting a party picture later in your life?) and be cautious about what private information you are sharing (think about it: do you want strangers to know your exact address? do you want the burglars to know your holiday absense in advance? do you want marketing firms to have your private phone number?).
On GLG 9.3: Engage in the public dialogue about upcomming infrastruction projects in your community e.g. wind power plants, new industrial areas, new roads and bridges, a new school, an advancement of the digital infrastructure. Wheigh the positive and negative aspects of those projects as well as your own and the community interest to find an adequate compromise that serves the community and the local environment.
On GLG 9.4: Welcome innovation seem to be an easy action. But welcoming new things is a challenge for many people. New innovations and developments go along with change and people tend to cling to the already known, to the existing world. New developments may endanger existing systems, your existing way of life, maybe also jobs when industries change. Therefore, it is very important to stay open minded to new ideas and to inform yourself about possible resulting changes and advantages. That helps to fight the "unknown" that cause most of the fears and resistence. If you are someone who easily adopt to a changing environment and new innovation, still be aware that other may not. You are then in the special position to help other to be open and adopt.
On GLG 9.5: Most plans for progress seem to be great and benefit the community as a whole. But it is very important to make sure that the benefits are equally distributed and the underprivileged are especially cared for and supported. Engage in your community development, the local public debate and also make this a topic of your vote in elections.
Since October 14th, we are using Sundays to discuss one GLG. Follow us to read more next Sunday.
